actions bring misery to the victims of bullying. - decoration Photo

EVENT happened six years ago still remains in my memory Hisham Malek. When he was with a group of students at a religious school in southern homeland thrashed a form three students with iron rods and brooms to cause death.

He should make preparation for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) was found guilty and sentenced to prison. Its ambition to become a military officer to a halt.

Hisham expectations parents send her to private school that educated the world and the hereafter is balanced shattered when he 'turned' into a killer.

That part of the story that occurred as a result of acts of bullying are not only brought misery to the victims, but also provide negative consequences to the perpetrator.

In fact, statistics have ever issued by the U.S. authorities found that about 71 percent of students involved in shooting incidents in schools in the country had become a victim of bullying.

Noran Fauziah deliver a lecture to the participants of Training of Trainers (TOT) who participated in bullying intervention program organized by HELP University College in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Anti-bullying
By Kandersteg Declaration, signed in Switzerland in 2007, estimated there were about 200 million school children around the world are victims of bullying or abused by their peers.Following the discovery, all educators around the world have agreed to start bullying prevention efforts as early as possible. They are looking for students at risk, provide protection and promote healthy relationships.

In Malaysia, a pilot study of bullying intervention program conducted by an adjunct professor at HELP University College, Assoc. Dr. Jacob, along with Noran Fauziah Fatimah Haron, who is also senior lecturer at the private higher education institutions (IPTS) found that a quarter of the bullies at risk of having a criminal record when 30 years old.
The study was conducted with Children Fund United Nations (UNICEF), Ministry of Education and Psychology Association of Malaysia which involved six schools in Kuala Lumpur and 12 secondary schools in Selangor in 2006.

Among other facts obtained in the study of bullying is the pattern formed on the sixth week of school. It can happen in front of people, events repeat every 25 minutes in the classroom and left a lifelong impact.

Noran provides the definition of bullying as aggressive behavior whether physical or psychological performed repeatedly on the victim, and it seeks to bring the feeling is not fun.

The impact on victims

He said the kids were not aware of what they are doing is part of the physical forms of bullying, language, gestures, intimidation, and the relationship such as boycott, slander, defame, impersonate the voice, refuses to accept the victim in group activities and writing bad things toilets.

"Based on these studies, we found that 29.4 percent of cases occur in the class bullies, 11.3 percent before teachers enter the classroom, the canteen of 9.8 percent, 6.7 percent in the toilet and the rest of the corridor, the field of assembly and boarding schools," he said.

Outside schools, 13.4 percent of the incident when home from school, 8.7 per cent in bus stations and 6.5 percent, while on the way to school.

What can be deduced from the study, the activities of bullying began in primary school again and the symptoms peaked up to secondary school.

"Usually at the secondary level, a victim of bullying and bully the students are mostly the students of the two," he said.

More surprisingly, the effect will happen to the victims of bullying often causes them to intend to kill himself, facing depression, worry and low self-esteem, including health problems and physical injuries.

Victims also come to hate school and decreased academic achievement in social impacts such as experiencing the silence, no more friends and feel marginalized.

Consistent with calls for bullying eradicated symptoms Symptoms Discipline Handling Steering Committee, chaired by Deputy Education Minister, Datuk Ir. Wee Ka Siong move created almost 10,000 new positions of senior teachers in each discipline is assigned to national and secondary schools soon.

In addition to official duties of teaching, they have other responsibilities that keep disciplinary 9.844 5.5 million students in primary and secondary schools.

The study conducted by Noran now used as a reference and training for teachers in the country to address the problem of school bullying, respectively.

He shared the experience of bullying intervention programs organized by HELP University College in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Bullying - Identify type, Prey And Predators

RESULTS case studies of bullying among school children in the West published in foreign journals revealed that student bullying in adulthood is likely to become criminals.

While the students to be victims of bullying tend to kill themselves because of the pressure.

Dean of the Faculty of Cognitive Science, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Professor Datin Dr. Noran Fauziah Jacob said, reading a journal featuring the story of a 13-year-old student committed suicide in Japan because of the pressure he faced as a result Pemerasan blackmailed by a group of senior students are asked to submit money of RM38, 000 to them.

He stressed that much money was stolen from his parents and eventually committed suicide because of frustration with what has happened.

That poor students had left a note for her parents to explain why he killed himself.

"In Malaysia, 13-year-old students are students first and this may be an indication that the victims were students of lower secondary students of form one, two and three.

"The bullying of students is made up of upper secondary students of Form Four, five and six," he said.

Elaborating, Noran, who had conducted research on bullying among students in secondary schools in Kedah and Perlis in 2002, said bullying consists of two categories: physical bullying and psychological bullying.

He said the bullying involves physical at-hit or psychological bullying while maneuvering over the mock-mock example, if the student's name or the name of the student's father is quite unusual so it would be mockery of senior students who bully.

"My study also found that students who are not attractive or looks dark skin often becomes a victim," he said.

The study, involving 2.600 respondents from lower and upper secondary schools in Kedah and Perlis.

He said, although psychological bullying less media attention, it is actually serious in school.

"I am now making a study of bullying involving pupils in Perak.

"Initial findings indicate psychological bullying occurs most in the National Type Chinese Primary School (SRJKC) while physical bullying more prevalent in the Tamil National Type Primary School (SRJKT)," he said.

Preliminary studies to date involving 700 students at nine schools in Perak.

The findings also showed that physical bullying and the psychology of bullying in the lower primary school.

Since the research is still at an early stage so he decided that bullying in primary school is quite low because of the Islamic Education subject taught to students in national schools which comprise the majority Malay-Muslim students.

"I hope to achieve the target respondents were more than 2,000 students when the review is over soon," he said.

New study is expected to be completed in April 2004.

About the academic performance of students who bully, Noran explained, the results show that bullying has nothing to do with academic achievement.

He said there are students who excel in academics become bullies in school.

"Just look at the boarding school that their results are very good but a bully," he said.

So what causes students to become bullies?

Answering that question, Noran said peers had the strongest influence to change the behavior of students.

Obviously, if the observed incidence of bullying usually involves a group of students and their age is age.

"Peer pressure will encourage students to be influenced by the behavior of their friends who like to bully," he said.

Another factor is that students who reported larger-sized and sturdy like the bullying student body size is smaller for the shows 'power' and physical strength.

In addition, he said, the findings also show that students are bullies because he did not feel safe if you do not do something to protect themselves from unwanted items.

"They often feel suspicious and insecure in school and to overcome those feelings, they begin to bully junior students.

"The success of bullying junior students will show their strength, power, and not easily bullied," he said.

Other factors that were derived from the study is the attitude of teachers who like to praise some clever students in the classroom can lead to dissatisfaction of other students are less intelligent.

According to him, usually students who are often praised by teachers will be targeted.

"I advise teachers to be praised all the students according to their abilities in the classroom.

"This is because if only one or two students only commendable, it can cause jealousy and resentment of other students," he said.

Commenting on what can be done by the school to deal with cases of bullying, Noran said elements of the disadvantages of bullying can be incorporated into the curriculum.

He said, it can be inserted in any of the existing subjects and the duty of all teachers to discuss issues to students.

He said that in Norway, there are anti-bullying policies are included in school curricula.

Through this policy, he said, the students involved will be subjected to bullying by the fault.

In addition, Noran said parents' involvement in addressing the problem of bullying in schools has become important.

Obviously, parents should discuss with their child's teacher if possible change of attitude, be quiet or lack of appetite for food.

"Parents need to become good observers as not all students who are victims want to report it to the school.

"They fear the threat of bullying students who once chose to bury a sense," he said.

He hopes the study results can be used by all parties to reduce or overcome the problem of bullying among students.

Tips to avoid bullying.

1. Each student must dare to give information to the authorities or their families if the particular individual being bullied.

2. As friends, you need to know any changes to your friend and immediately report to supervisors or teachers.

The problem of bullying: Students sign agreements

A form of contractual agreement between students, parents and schools should be established to address the problem of bullying in schools, especially at a boarding school.

The contract was signed by students and parents to comply with school rules and are willing to accept a fixed penalty if found guilty of violating school regulations have been enacted.

Malaysian Psychology Association president Prof. Datin Dr. Noran Fauziah Yaakob said, such regulations have been implemented in developed countries and managed to reduce the problem.

Each student signed a contract is mandatory at the beginning of the year or beginning of the session.

However he wants the school to be firm in implementing the zero tolerance approach to students or parents of students involved.

`` If there is a compromise meant that the rules have no meaning and no need to be implemented,''he said, was to study the symptoms of bullying among students in primary and secondary schools in the country.

Noran Fauziah Clearly, addressing the problem of bullying not by way of tolerance, but it must be stressed, as studies show they are involved in this case potentially involved in criminal activity in adulthood.

He said studies showed that they engaged in bullying during the school eventually becomes an adult who is involved in criminal cases, raping and torturing his wife.

`` What we do is to save students from these tended to act when they grow up,''he said.

Asked about incidents of bullying are common in boarding schools, he said, it really has become a culture among students in such schools.

He was responding to incidents of bullying against Muhammad Afiq Qusyairi Baharuddin, 13, students from Islamic schools Padang Tengku, Kuala Lipis, Pahang.

However, he stressed, the school should serve to warn the students about the outcome of the activities involved in bullying.

`` Why did the school often remind their students due to bullying their colleagues or junior students,''he said.

In fact, he also questioned the process of monitoring the school to students in boarding schools so that a student may be involved in gangsterism.

`` Typically, students involved in gangs are students from ordinary schools, thus arises the question mark how boarding schools can be involved with this group,''he said.

Meanwhile, he said, in a study of the phenomenon of bullying in the boarding school involving senior students who want to show the power of the junior students.

`` Students will be senior junior students as young as the instruction of senior students to wash clothes, wash the bathroom, get food or take food to them,''he said.

Physical bullying occurs when students refused to obey junior senior students.

At the same time his research showed that students who like to bully other students, especially physical bullying is because like fun.

Another factor is that they encourage bullying is intentionally fun to see other students suffer due to their actions.

In fact, bullying is done by students who do not excel in academics as envy-driven attitude towards students who excel.

`` With the way he can remove dissatisfaction and disappointment in others,''he said.

The most common factor is the student bullying because they feel great to beat the victim and the victim of hatred exists.

Bullying in Schools - PARENTS AND TEACHERS NEED TO PLAY ROLE

School is an institution that is very important for the country. This is where the next generation of leaders and future leaders in the country, educated and formed. Similarly, the institution of school is a place to nurture and establish identity and patriotism of the nation, in addition to functioning as a place of academic education and skills.

However press reports indicate cases of juvenile crime among school students are becoming more common, which to some extent affected the role of schools as a former self-esteem and education of the country's future.

Most of the problems of crime in schools starting with the problem of bullying. Bullying is a form of abuse through the rough action of the weak in order to show the strength of self. Bullying can occur in any physical form such as beating, extortion, slapping, kicking, pulling hair or pinching. Meanwhile, mental bullying is to ridicule, taunt, harass and insult. In general, bullying is more likely to occur among male students, either individually or collectively.

However bullying among girls should not be ignored, but it is increasing. Starting with the case of Sherman Mohd Jaafar, 14, who suffered serious injuries in the neck and back after a beating by five senior students in a school dormitory in Tumpat, Kelantan. Recently, cases of bullying in Kuching which involves five high school girls who do violence to the victims of a mass has expressed concern in the community, especially our parents. This situation created a tense atmosphere is not safe and secure at school.

Indeed the issue of bullying in schools should not be viewed with one eye only. It requires commitment from all parties, teachers, parents or students themselves to ensure that the institution be building schools instead of science to produce a gangster. Bullying, either for fun or for hatred and seeking revenge, is not due to cultural institutions menunjangi school.

Many factors affect a student involved in the phenomenon of bullying. Among them, family background, peer group, less religious upbringing, environment and school culture and mass media. Thus, it is clear that the family background and school environment and culture greatly influenced the development of an individual. Parents should spend time and devote full loving to their children. Parents should always be sensitive to the selection of peers by their children, to take cognizance of every activity that their children are involved.

In addition, students spend more time at school than at home. Teachers are parents of students at the school. As a teacher and parents of students at the school, the teacher should be familiar with to detect any negative signs or changes in a person is. Like, look at the behavior of students who are always cheerful in school has changed its identity in silence and isolate themselves. It may display the signs that a student might be bullied or involved in any problems. Thus, parents and teachers play a comparable role in the formation of an individual. With this, it can curb the young today are stuck in the mire of these symptoms.

Although, all these factors affect the emotions and the formation of an individual, but the individual should be aware of the impact that will exist in the future as a result of the follow-horn today. They also must assess the rationale for that involvement in social symptoms such as these not only increase the crime rate in Malaysia but will destroy all our dreams and careers of a student. This implies dim the future of the students themselves and the victims of bullying.

MEASURES TO SOLVE THE BULLY PROBLEM

Among the steps that I can share to solve the problem of bullying is:

1. Religion:
In this case, the most important step is to give my opinion agama.Pada education, religious education is the most important elements in life as a human form of religious education to be sensitive to sin and the reward or consideration of good and evil in the afterlife. This will cause it not to bully because they understand that bullying and any act that may cause adverse effects to one another is a wrong action on the religious side.

2. Strict regulations:
to solve the problem of bullying, I feel that there should be strict regulations that may be appropriate action against bullies and regulations should be implemented without "discriminate." Anyone who is bullying, regardless of whatever rank or position shall be penalized. In addition, the parties must also be transparent in handling bullying. In addition to taking action against bullies, the cases should be disclosed to the public for a lesson to others.

3. Role of Media:
Today, the media was an important influence. Therefore, mass media such as electronic media, print media or internet media should exercise their social responsibility in addressing the problem of bullying. Films that contain scenes of extreme violence and who can educate the youth to emulate the actions of bullying should be banned from public viewing. The media also need to display movies, pictures, stories and articles highlighting the adverse effects of bullying. In addition juag media should always show the ads ban bullying bullies like smoking bans.

4. Poster:
In addition, the prohibition of bullying posters to be printed and distributed by the parties and posted in places where the strategic, such as schools, supermarkets, mosques and houses of worship, bus stops, public perputakaan, train stations and so forth. This way people will be compelled to feel sensitive to the issue of bullying.

5. Role of Government Bodies and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs):
Government bodies and NGOs have, either personally or by joining forces to organize the programs that can alert people to the issue of bullying. This can be done by focusing on specific groups such as KEDA parents and teachers with the purpose of member ilmju disclosure to parents and teachers so they can know whether their children or students have been the victim of bullying or not. The second form of the program is targeted at teenagers as a group of teens that become bullies or victims of bullying. They should be made aware not to bully and to the victims of bullying should be made aware or given the enthusiasm for reporting incidents of bullying to the parties concerned.

Violence in schools: Moving forward

By Professor Datin Noran Fauziah bt Jacob and Dr. Goh Chee Leong

School plays an important role in providing protection for children against violence. However, for most children, the environment in schools actually expose them to violence in which they will learn violence. They are exposed to punishment in the form of physical, psychological punishment in the form of a very brutal and shameful, and gender-based violence and sexual in nature, and bullying.

Professor of HELP University College, a Professor Datin Noran Fauziah bt. And Dr. Jacob. Goh Chee Leong share views on the importance to stop violence in schools.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3, 2007 - "The cases of bullying in schools has become common now a matter of concern in Malaysia. One of the shocking case of bullying throughout the country is a massive attack against a 16-year-old students by senior students in 2005 which has resulted in the death of the student. This case and other cases have been increasing public concern on violence in schools in Malaysia. Minister of Education had warned about bullying, which is the statement made by him, that strong action will be imposed on those who do, and he also declared that bullying is something that "can not be accepted."

"We must understand that bullying is not necessarily occur in the form of physical violence only. Types of bullying that often occurs and the worst in the Malaysian schools are more psychological nature. If 'terrorism' can be described as an act of deliberate harm done to others, the bully who is not physically represented in the form of violence in the form of emotional and social. Most people give more attention to bullying in a physical form and ignore the form of psychological bullying and is not considered significant. This is an irresponsible position and is very dangerous for both types of bullying can cause distress to the victim.

The effects of bullying

"Emotionally, victims who were bullied often feel scared and worried every time they are in school. This is difficult for them to participate in the learning process. Due to the overwhelming fear, the victim will be skipping school to avoid bullying.

"According to expert reports, the victims of bullying often feel self doubt and a lack of self confidence. Many victims fail themselves for causing the bullying occurs, they believe that the weakness and incompetence they have contributed to the reasons why they were chosen by the bully-bully.

"There are some victims who are still suppress feelings of anger and revenge against the bully-bully and social environments that encourage and support bullying behavior. This anger, if not addressed, can cause the victim himself will be the bully on the child, which can be categorized as a victim of bullying. While the other victims will show their anger through anti-social behavior such as vandalism and theft.

Act of suicide

"There are tragic cases where victims of bullying has decided that the only way to stop their suffering is to kill themselves. The research has been done until now, has shown that there is a connection between bullying and ideas of suicide.

"Bullying behavior also can have an impact on children's learning. To ensure the effectiveness of an education, children must be given an environment that can be considered as safe from physical, emotional and intellectual. Only when children feel safe and intact, they will have to be more open to knowledge, only then they will try and learn, and only at the time they are more open to interact and engage with their teachers and friends their partners. When children feel that they threatened to hurt or humiliated, they will not achieve their full academic potential.

"The social, children who have become victims of bullying are often marginalized by their peers. This may be because they feel humble and it leads to lack of confidence in yourself to make friends with others and socialize.

"In most cases, children have been bullied may actually lack social skills to make friends with other children in comfort. Often, victims of bullying feel awkward to socialize with others, and this discomfort becomes more severe when they are bullied. It was a difficult round halted by the victim where they do not have the opportunity to interact with their peers at the other because this is an important stage of their development.

Enhance the school community

"To deal with bullying behavior among students, the ability of the school community and parents need to be improved to cope with situations of bullying and victims effectively.

"UNICEF, together with the Faculty of Behavioural Science at HELP University College and the Ministry of Education has begun a project to introduce behavioral interventions for bullying to schools in Malaysia. This intervention model is based on the Olweus school intervention model has been introduced successfully in several countries around the dunia.Intervensi This should meet the following:

* Intervention-intervention for victims of bullying are effective and timely;
* Implementation of anti-bullying policies in schools;
* Delivering a clear message to students that bullying is a behavior that is unacceptable;
* Provide training to students, parents and teachers to enable them to effectively deal with bullying behavior among students, including training in strategies to find solutions to problems and increase social skills;
* Provide accurate information and education for children, teachers, parents and the public about what bullying is; what the cause and effects of bullying; including measures of prevention and intervention.

Awareness and the need for urgent action

"Awareness among teachers and students is needed, to provide information that bullying in any form is not acceptable. A shared belief among teachers and students are bullying incidents should be resolved by the victims themselves. One obstacle to the victim is "they should learn to defend themselves and fight back", that is a bad advice, especially when the victim had to deal with a big bully.

"While educating the victims to respond by means of a more positive and constructive part of the intervention, but the program also focuses on the teachers, parents and those around them to play a role in creating an environment a safe physical and emotional environment of the school.

"This pilot project will be completed by the end of 2007, in which its effectiveness will be assessed. Our hope is that it is very effective, and it will be introduced to schools across the country at the national level. "

Four steps inhibit acts of bullying

From time to time, there are extreme cas
es of physical bullying that occurs among students in schools that receive media attention. This resulted in extreme cases suicide, serious injury and even death.

Examples of physical bullying is pushing, slapping, hitting. In a few cases have been reported, it involves not only boys but also girls.

In this study authors have done over 2.600 students from 26 secondary schools from two states, the report found they were involved with the activities of bullying (physical and psychological) is high.

According to Professor Olweus from Bergen University, Norway is a pioneer in the study of bullying in the world, if cases of bullying occurring in the 10-15 percent range is considered serious.

There are many reasons why students bully. The bulk of the bully saying bullying other students because they are fun-fun.

Even the bully who is proud to have him at the head of the school bully!

It said the victim was to be bully and bullied others say they get bored with school and bullying other students is one way to get rid of ennui. Because bullying is because they get angry or hate the victims.

New students at school are always individuals who are victims of bullying. A student who loved the teachers will not be favored associates.

In the case of physical bullying, their small body of the victim. Do not want to share stationery or provide ideas for making homework is also a reason for bullying.

For boarding students, the form of bullying also happens to ask the victim to wash their clothes, cleaning toilets or taking food from the canteen. Those who prefer to speak in English is also not acceptable.

Different

What can be inferred here is that they are the victims were students who preferred not because they are different from the majority of students.

When asked to the school as the teachers counseling, discipline teachers or principals, students with a bully is not interested in education, mischievous, and have discipline problems.

In terms of family background, bully said to come from dysfunctional families, do not get full attention from their parents or too pampered. The school is aware of the new students were the target.

To address the problem of bullying, schools need to acknowledge that a problem exists and it hurts the students. Victims do not complain to the school if they know their story will not be trusted and they are not guaranteed protection.

There are four levels to address the problem of bullying.

The first stage is the level of the school, the second level and third level of the individual classes.

For the school, the first step is to obtain information about school bullying cases that occurred in their school, whether psychological or physical. This can be done by asking students to fill out questionnaires related to bullying.

Students can also write the cases of bullying they have experienced. To get a higher response on this matter, the identity of the student shall be secret.

Second, schools must have clear rules relating to bullying.

This will not only be done by pasting posters antibuli in school, but also distributing pamphlets antibuli to each student to read along with their parents.

The information contained in this brochure include the concept of bullying, some simple tips for dealing with incidents of bullying, who can be contacted in the event of cases of bullying and a telephone line or e-mail address to report incidents of bullying.

Those who can make the report not only victims but also witnesses.

Third, a coordinating committee be formed antibuli school level.

Among the members of this committee consists of principals, teachers, counseling, teacher discipline, parent representatives and student representatives. Their role is to manage the program and evaluate its effectiveness antibuli.

Fourth, a discussion of bullying should be included in the agenda of PTA meetings.

For the class level, the class of rules relating to zero tolerance of bullying should be formed. Regulations shall include all conduct deemed to be bullying behavior (psychological and physical), and what penalties will be accepted if caught or reported it.

Each student is given a list of rules and they must sign the document and a copy kept in the student file. Prior to that, the parents also sign the applicable regulations. This behavior is an agreement between the student and parents or guardians with the school.

From time to time, teachers should discuss the issue of bullying with students.

For the individual level, it involves the bully and victim. Antibuli coordinating committee is to hold discussions to resolve the issue not only with the bully and victim, but also their parents or guardians.

Next, teachers can provide counseling, conduct role playing session empatik or not aggressive with the bully. Assertive training will be held with the victim.

It's time those responsible need to think seriously about the problem of bullying and try to how to overcome or prevent it from happening.

We do not have to wait another extreme cases to occur before we do something to ensure the safe schools (psychological and physical) for our children.

- Datin Dr. Noran Fauziah Jacob is President of the Malaysian Psychological Association.
